Members of every ethnicity and religious affiliation deserve a community that can help support them in times of need.
Such was the vision of Adam Reiss, who had retired in Coral Gables, Florida in the late 1930s. Though he was on his deathbed, he wished to use his wealth to start a home for the aged members of the Jewish community. Ida Cohen, a friend of Reiss, became the founder of the Miami Jewish Home For The Aged in 1940.
But Reiss’ mission was destined to evolve beyond this. The scope of the organization changed, and with its success came an on-campus hospital, assisted and independent living facilities, and community outreach programs. To this day, the organization’s Program for All-Inclusive Care (PACE) remains a Miami staple, helping provide more cost-effective alternatives to nursing homes for the elderly. PACE eliminates the need for the elderly to manage their services through multiple providers and facilitates a breadth of medical services.
The organization became rechristened as Miami Jewish Health Systems. Though their stated mission is to provide healthcare “honoring traditional Jewish values of dignity and respect,” they actually serve all faiths, as well as a wider age variety of patients. MJHS sponsors both patient care as well as medical research efforts, becoming a healthcare staple of the Miami-Dade and Broward counties.
Now, Miami Jewish Health Systems is an all-in-one care facility for those in need of treatment and enrichment. A team of specialists works tirelessly with patients, aiding in the treatment of paralysis, injury rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s, and mental health conditions. Dedicated rehabilitative facilities provide innovative therapy options for patients as well. The organization boasts on-campus residential facilities for senior citizens, helping to realize Adam Reiss’ dream of providing safe housing and a community for the elderly.
As an organization both invested in medical research and the Floridian Jewish Community, the Finker-Frenkel Family Foundation is proud to partner with Miami Jewish Health Systems through their own foundation. Donations go toward expanding care offerings and furthering research toward conditions such as Alzheimer’s. Visit their website for more information on how you can donate and get involved.
